The crisis started on 30 September 2005 with the publication of a series of mocking cartoons of the Muslims’ Prophet Muhammad. The publication sparked the worst foreign political crisis for Denmark since the Second World War. There have been protests against Denmark from
all over the world, Danish embassies have been vandalised, Danish tourists have had to cancel holidays and Danish goods have been boycotted with redundancies as a result.

The decision by the Danish Director of Public Prosecutions on
15 March 2006 put an initial stop to the matter. The Director of Public Prosecutions is the highest judicial prosecution authority in Denmark.

This leaflet outlines the background to and progress of the crisis by presenting the most important source material and placing events and players in a time frame. The authors do not claim either to represent or speak on behalf of Muslims in
Denmark or elsewhere. However,
according to opinions reported by the press, many people, both Muslims and non-Muslims, share the views presented by the authors.

The purpose of this text is to answer some of the questions most
frequently asked to Muslims about the crisis.
