Trials, tribulations, afflictions, calamities are just few meanings that fall under the word, 'Fitan' concerning which Allah says, 

"Fear the Fitna, which affects
not only those of you who do wrong
(but it may afflict everybody). "
Surah al-Anfal 8:25
